Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for more than three decades. This proven and safe procedure has allowed many people improve their body contours through the precise targeting and then removal of isolated deposits of fat. The surgery is performed in conjunction with other surgeries such as abdominoplasty, breast reduction, to name a few. It is an ideal solution for patients who want to have rejuvenated and refined contours.

Who is the right candidate for this procedure?

Before a candidate makes the decision to undergo this procedure, consulting a surgeon and knowing if he or she is an ideal candidate is crucial. The best candidate for the surgery is one who is within 25 pounds of body weight, is in general good health and has deposits of fat that do not respond to exercise and diet.

  • • It is important to note that liposuction does not remove cellulite and tightens skin neither. Your plastic surgeon might recommend other procedures for improving those conditions.
  • • You have localized fat deposits in your neck, thighs, abdomen, arms and abdomen that might be consequential to heredity or do not go away with exercise and diet.
  • • You good skin elasticity and minimum amount of excess skin. Loss of skin elasticity with the process of ageing can affect the results of liposuction, however if skin maintains elasticity then age is not a contradiction for this procedure.
  • • You are in good physical health and do not weigh more than 20 pounds, and your weight is stable. If you are trying to lose a massive amount of weight or even weight gain, for instance, you are planning pregnancy, then do not opt for this procedure.

If you have realistic expectations and positive attitude then you are the right candidate for liposuction surgery

Information regarding procedure

The liposuction surgery is performed under either general or local anaesthesia. The anaesthesia means without any pain. The difference between general and local anaesthesia is that how much of the entire procedure you might remember. In most liposuction methods, the process involves injecting a numbing solution. In case of local anaesthesia, only part of the body that has to be treated is numbed, and you would be conscious during the procedure. general anaesthesia can be given either through a needle injection or as a gas, and you would be put to sleep for the entire duration of the surgery. Once you wake up, you will still be numb in the area that has been operated, and you would feel no or little pain. The type of anaesthesia to be administered would be discussed during the initial consultation.

Liposuction surgery removes fat from body using suction. In this surgery, thin, small, blunt-tipped tubes known as cannula are inserted through small incisions made in the skin. The plastic surgeon moves these tubes under the skin targeting fat deposits and suctions them out. There are different methods that facilitate liposuction:

Tumescent liposuction – It involves a wetting solution with a local anaesthetic like lidocaine or other medications in IV fluids that is injected prior the procedure causing blood vessels to constrict or shrink down. This means the surgery can be performed with the patient under local anaesthesia. It not only reduces post-surgery pain and bleeding but also minimizes blood loss.

Suction-assisted liposuction –it is the most traditional type of liposuction. It draws out fat deposits with a vacuum.

Power-assisted liposuction–It is traditional suction-assistedlipo with an addition of a tool for increasing the movement of cannula that speeds up the process of fat removal.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction–It transmits energy through a hand piece that helps in loosening and melting fat, allowing much greater volume of fat to be removed. This is the best option for dense fat, larger areas and male patients.

VASER- It is a variation of UAL. It uses an ultrasonic cannula with many grooves that evenly disperses energy thus improving disruption of fat and removal.

Laser-assisted liposuction – It include SlimLipo and Smartlipo. It is a new technology. Laser would work like ultrasound for disrupting the fat cells and making fat removal process less traumatic and more efficient.

SAFELipo refers to a procedure that is developed by an Aesthetic Society member. It involves a 3-step procedure of separation, aspiration and fat equalization.

Separation–loosens, emulsifies and se+parates out the unwanted fat cells without generating heat thus vital blood vessels, skin and other tissues remain unharmed.

Aspiration – In this stage, fat cells are removed through suction without causing any harm to the supporting structures such as skin, blood vessels and nerves.

Fat Equalization–It smooths out the remaining thin fat layer leaving a uniform layer of ‘local fat grafts’ that averts contour deformities from forming

It was originally developed for addressing the challenges of revision liposuction cases. The procedure removes a significant amount of fat deposits without increasing possibilities of skin damage or contour deformities.

Types of laser liposuction

With the advancement in the technology, it is now possible to perform laser liposuction using different methods. These methods looses fat cells making their removal much easier. Although they are more expensive than manual techniques of liposuction, many patients feel these procedures are worth the ycost because they involve a fast recovery time and less discomfort. Laser liposuction include the following:

CoolLipoTM–This technique is designed especially for sensitive parts such as the arms, neck, underneath the chin and jowls. It also tightens the skin with minimal bruising and uses local anaesthesia.

SlimLipoTM – It melts the fat cells before removing them, thus reducing discomfort, pain and swelling associated with the traditional method of liposuction. Some patient can go to work after undergoing the procedure.

SmartLipoTM–This methods creates minimal scarring and is used for removing only up to eight pounds of fat deposits at a time and fine tuning. Like with SlimLipo, patients can resume work either on the day of procedure or within two to three days.

Abdominal Etching–This particular type of lipocution is designed to improve the abdominal muscles giving a desirable set of ‘six-packs abs’. the plastic surgeon would first outline the muscles followed by the thin layer of fat that can obscure these muscles. The surgeon might use laser assisted, traditional, or ultrasound methods to perform this minimal recovery treatment.

Make sure you adhere to the instructions given by the cosmetic surgeon. Once the surgery is done, you along with the caregiver will receive detailed instructions. After liposuction is performed, recovery might just take a few days or several months, depending on the type of liposuction done and the size of the area to be treated.

Recovery during the initial weeks of the procedure

The plastic surgeon would advise the patient to wear compression garments for the first few days of the surgery for speedy recovery. After a few weeks of the procedure, patients start feeling comfortable enough that their compression garments can be removed.

Patients usually report pain a day after the surgery is performed. In most cases, this discomfort and pain is minor and can be relieved with medication and moderate walking. Usually in less than a week, patients can walk and move normally, even can return to work however some discomfort will be there. Patients should take shower than baths for nearly a week after the procedure. during this span, numbness, swelling and bruising will start to go away. In case you experience symptoms that are not usual then make consult the surgeon without any delay.

Immediately after the procedure, patients will see some difference as fat deposits would be removed. Full liposuction results would be visible only several months after the procedure. it is important to understand that liposuction aims at improving the shape of your body and is not the option for weight loss. Also make sure you visit the surgeon as and when prescribed. Follow-up visits are essential and helps in faster and better recovery.

Cost of the liposuction

When it comes to the cost involving liposuction procedure, it depends on several factors. Whether the procedure is performed as a standalone or in combination with other surgeries, fee of the surgeon, facility where the procedure would be performed, anaesthesiologist and staff are some factors that influence the cost of the surgery. Discuss cost associated with the procedure during initial visits.
